Plating deposits a thin layer of one metal on top of another, and thin layers wear through. PVD (physical vapour deposition) bonds the finish at a molecular level instead, which is why it does not flake, fade or turn your skin green.
It is also why our rings carry a tarnish-free claim rather than a "resists tarnishing" one — the finish is not sitting on the surface waiting to lift.
